We’ve talked elsewhere about Instagram your Policy in previous blog posts on our London Social Media Week activities, and now it’s time to reflect on how it went.
We got a disappointingly low level of responses – four, although we’ve been promised a fifth. We’re not quite sure why the response was this low. One comment on Yammer suggested that we were wrong to have chosen Instagram – perhaps we should just have opened the “competition” out to other apps, and general photography. Perhaps it just didn’t get enough visibility or promotion. We’ll need to do some internal thinking about if and how we run this type of initiative again. I did say n a previous post that if it got one person thinking about engaging differently then that constituted a success.
But we’re grateful to those who did submit an entry: with thanks to those who entered here they are.
Here’s one from our UK Space Agency colleagues:

Ben decided to showcase UK manufacturing, en route from a rainy Heathrow:

Steve submitted one of his Twitter pictures showing young people learning more about the Business in You Campaign (#businessinyou):

Finally, Roland submitted this picture showing an individual signing up to the Better Business for All programme:

We’ll put these on our Pinterest boards as promised – where in the last week we’ve been focussing on a board celebrating the Department’s involvement in Global Entrepreneurship Week – have a look.

Good on you for trying something new, and having the honesty to report on it here.
I think there’s potential in the idea, but perhaps it needs more promotion and hand-holding to make non-native social media users comfortable capturing elements of their work day via photos – and feeling confident to share them?
There’s definitely something in the idea of representing the work civil servants do in more visual ways. Its time will come.
