I get by with a lil help...

Last week, with a pressing piece to camera appointment, in which the dulcet tones and vision of our subject needed to be captured looming in the diary, I felt that this event leant itself to an impromptu training session and of course this blog.

We in the Digital team usually find ourselves being all things to all men and women. In this particular case, as the resident video producer / editor (I like to think of myself as a 'preditor') on shoots involving pieces to camera I also monitor sound, and in certain cases set up lighting, film and edit the entire proceedings.

I briefed my colleague, Festus Alexander, in advance on what to expect from the shoot, his role and what to look out for when ensuring that the sound he was monitoring (his role for the shoot was as a Sound Person) was captured without any problems.

From my perspective this gave me an opportunity to transfer skills and acquire very competent assistance from my assistant for the shoot. It enabled me to focus more on the visual aspects, and pay closer attention to the shoot’s composition and lighting. I considered it very helpful having an extra pair of hands. So that the experience could be shared from his perspective and mine here’s what Festus Alexander had to say about the shoot itself and what he thought of the entire experience.

Festus Alexander:

I had the privilege of working with my colleague Michael Morgan on a video shoot with Matt Hancock. This was my second time doing this and I found it both rewarding and fulfilling. Michael has a professional attitude and his attention to detail is second to none. My task was to make sure that the sound for the video was okay whilst Michael concentrated on the filming. It was a complete success and Michael stressed that having a helper made his task easier. This is something that I want to do more of in the future and intend to escort Michael on future shoots.
