Comment:
When trying to organise a village fete and charity fundraising event which included stalls, exhibits, fairground rides , music and fireworks I had extensive dealings with my local authority.
I was helped and advised by their Environmental Health Officer who advised me on health and safety, food safety, licensing, noise and other issues such as road closures.
I cannot praise this support highly enough – so much varied help from one officer at no cost.
Before this help and advice I had become concerned as to how to meet the required standards but the EHO made things so simple to understand.
I had checked with some local H&S consultants and was advised that to ‘risk assess but not attend’ they would charge a minimum of £800.
I was however shocked to hear that the Coalition was implementing extensive cuts that would affect this service.
On behalf of volunteers I would urge you to recognise the truly useful role the EHO plays for event organisers.
